One of the most important things to me in my thirties was raising my kids to love and follow Jesus. A Christian guru told me that if I followed what he said, my children would grow to be adults, “Mighty in Spirit”.
Bill Gothard promised us this, and like thousands of other families, I did my best to make my world as navy and white as possible. What I didn’t know was that Gothard was lying to us as he harmed teen girls! A mass deception.
More than a decade ago, I walked away from fundamentalism, Gothard, and patriarchy because patriarchal men do not know what to do with a young widow who can think for herself and her family.
This is one reason that I am passionate about helping women who have been oppressed by patriarchy.

It was a Sunday morning when God showed me how I had put my man-made rules before Him. This broke my heart. I never want anything to come before Him. But this was just the beginning of my journey.
Only months before, my husband had died in an auto accident.
While he was living, I was protected from other men in the church, but now they could put pressure on me to conform to the implied man-made rules. It was either do what they said or leave.
I will always choose to follow Jesus, so we left.
Panic, anxiety, and being overwhelmed, but as the days passed, the oppression began to lift and then breath.
I didn’t know I wasn’t breathing.
Ultimately, I would have to move 2 hours away to get the church people to stop badgering my kids, but eventually, we were free.
